#1 is B.S. I have worked in Antarctica and my appendix is still in me. My wisdom teeth had already been removed, but if one still has them and they aren’t causing problems, they can stay in.
May 1, 2015 — 9:33 am
“1. You cannot work in Antarctica unless your wisdom teeth and appendix are removed.” NOPE. There is no such a rule. It might be that some stations or particular missions to Antarctica require that but this is not a general rule. I actually know people who have been to Antarctica as scientists, spent there a few months, some even spent a winter there and all of them still have their appendixes and wisdom teeth.
October 28, 2015 — 11:27 pm
The appendix/ wisdom teeth removal was a rule for Aussies applying for winter contracts in the late eighties
May 5, 2015 — 9:34 am
Nice to know about the ice glacier continent… Its too interesting….
May 7, 2015 — 12:20 am
10. is a fact you never know?, who never know that?
May 7, 2015 — 12:37 pm
20. In January 1979, Emile Marco Palma became the first child born on the southernmost continent.
That was a planned action of Argentina to claim a part of Antarctica. The country sent a pregnant women there on purpose.
WRONG, Argentina has right to a part of the continent because of it’s proximity to it (and a long explanation better than this if you research)
June 2, 2015 — 5:48 am
WRONG. A country doesn’t have an automatic ‘right’ to any territory based on proximity. It has every right to make a claim to the territory however.
Regardless, Antarctica is a special place and perhaps better if it were not split up or claimed by anyone?
June 12, 2015 — 2:31 pm
Countries cannot claim land as their own just because it’s close to them. Anything over 200 miles from the coast is in international waters. Argentina has made that mistake before…
June 18, 2015 — 8:34 pm
Yeah right. Kinda like they ‘own’ the Falkland Islands???? Good luck with THAT Argentina.

#17….I have read that maps were discovered dated back to the 1500’s.
October 29, 2015 — 11:34 pm
I have scene data on maps even much older.
May 8, 2015 — 4:40 pm
What are the sources? I see much disinformation.
May 9, 2015 — 1:11 am
Well, Antarctica has been discovered much and much earlier!
You can see it clearly as early as 1569 on Mercator’s map which believed he copied from ancient Roman (Ellada) maps…
July 9, 2015 — 8:06 pm
I didn’t know about this map. Thank you.
This one even shows Antarctica without ice…
May 9, 2015 — 2:17 am
There’s also an active Vulcan in this continent
June 13, 2015 — 7:15 pm
Wasn’t it Spock?
May 9, 2015 — 3:27 am
Thank you very much for the pixs.
I wouldn´t care less about previos removal of appendix or wisdom teeth.
It may well be just some wise recomendation.
May 11, 2015 — 2:23 am
But why does the wisdom teeth and appendix have to come out?
June 14, 2015 — 7:44 pm
Wisdom teeth, no idea, but appendix if burst can kill you in a very short time, as I understand they dont do surgery there
May 12, 2015 — 6:27 am
O I love this blog very much
May 12, 2015 — 8:39 pm

May 30, 2015 — 2:59 pm
You can see few small red buttons with numbers written just below IMAGE after the text (incase viewing from mobile) just click on those and you get the rest !
May 13, 2015 — 5:58 am
I would like to know the reason behind for removing the wisdom teeth
and appendix, and why other parts of the body not effected.
June 5, 2015 — 11:28 pm
Because it’s not unusual for people to get appendicitis or dental issues with their wisdom teeth, both being pretty much useless to the human body. It could make sense that if there is no possibility to operate (which there is not at scientific stations in Antarctica) you would want travelers to get these removed. HOWEVER, I worked at McMurdo and the South Pole and I was never asked to get any of these removed. Fact #1 is, as already noticed, completely wrong.
June 8, 2015 — 8:48 am
Maybe because an appendix infection is the last thing you want when you live in Antarctica. Check this wikipedia link about a russian doctor who had to do it by himself.
May 13, 2015 — 8:54 am
So his name was Emilo Marco Palma (not Emile, this is a dude we’re talking about) and he was born in 78 not 79.
June 3, 2015 — 7:29 pm
It’s Emilio Marcos Palma, but yes, you’re right.
May 13, 2015 — 8:04 pm
Also, Antarctica only contains the full-hour timezones from -12 to +11 (or was it -11 to +12?) There’s a lot more in use, check Australia for example, or the timezones near the Datum line.
May 14, 2015 — 8:37 am

I’d like to know who wrote and edited this piece… I notice there’s no byline anywhere.
“Fungi perfectly adaps to extreme low temperatures, continuous and repeated freeze and thawing cycles.”
Adaps? Serial comma would be helpful, too.
Slide 14, “continets”
Slide 16, “fo the the”
About a dozen commas missing throughout. Get a copy editor!
June 13, 2015 — 3:59 am
I didn’t know Shakespeare read blogs. Comma, homma, bomma, who cares. This was not written by scientist as research paper. Capish?
May 17, 2015 — 11:13 pm
This article, although interesting is full of typographical mistakes. Please, proofread before you publish. That is what professionals do and insist on.

November 2, 2015 — 5:24 am
That is since 1994. It’s because no animals not indigenous are allowed there.
May 29, 2015 — 7:38 am
Great. I think most the people like to live there for a short time. A peaceful place is our wishes.
May 30, 2015 — 12:43 am

June 3, 2015 — 9:53 pm
Argentina has a parte of antartica due to an international treatment. Also being the southest country in the world it has the right to have a base. Who is the retatded who wrote the last fact?
June 4, 2015 — 1:34 am
Thank you for the interesting website. Where is the pic at the top taken please, of the boat docking at some modern looking port- is that in Antarctica?
June 4, 2015 — 2:27 pm
The fact 20 about Argentina is fake !!!! A part of Antartida belongs to Argentina because the lands connect under the water, what we call “submarine plates “.
June 6, 2015 — 8:27 am
Half of the information is WRONG please do not spread any wrong information about Antarctica.
June 6, 2015 — 11:39 am
Those mountains stretch for 3500 km or miles?
June 7, 2015 — 7:16 am
very very good
im from in iran
June 9, 2015 — 6:10 pm
#11: What’s more interesting is that Ukrainians actually brew their own vodka there. They only import ingredients. And when you come to visit, the 1st shot is for free. Also, they bought the station from Brits for 1 GBP only (for Brits, it was cheaper than to remove it).
October 31, 2015 — 2:15 pm
Now that’s an interesting fact lol
June 11, 2015 — 9:04 am
Do they have hookers at the bar there?
June 12, 2015 — 1:33 am
Ja. A planned action of Argentina? Only the south continent countries have really rigths over that lands. Please, go to your hemisphere, we are ok without your colonialism.
July 5, 2015 — 4:16 am
The people commenting about what rights of Argentinians please
There are 30,000 missing of your people’s that were killed by your government
Go find them and stop following your government propaganda distraction with what land you do NOT own and were never interested In.
Well until the crimes committed by your own governments and military junta on your own people
June 12, 2015 — 11:44 am
In 2003 there were 4 locations serving alcohol for money between McMurdo and Scott Bases alone. Not sure whether all four would be classically defined as bars, but several showed me a good time. And yes, I still have my appendix.
June 14, 2015 — 7:55 am
The US and other imperialist nations came from the extreme north of the Earth to take land in Antarctica, see the US portion of cake in there… why not Chile, not Argentina, sent a married couple of scientists of man and his pregnant wife to have his baby there, just a few km from chilean official lands? ANTARCTICA is the extreme back yard for South America, not for theUS, Canada and Western Europe… they have already the Arctic!
June 14, 2015 — 8:12 pm
#17. Not true.
Please give me information about iran
June 15, 2015 — 1:51 pm

Why those journalist just keep lying to people all the time?… And why most of them are a bunch of sexual perverts?…
June 18, 2015 — 11:50 am
#1 is not true. For the US Antarctic program, you can have an appendix. I still have mine. you MUST have all wisdom teeth removed though. thats not negotiable. Trust me, i tried!
#11 is not Vernadsky station. Thats palmer station run by the US Antarctic Program. yes, it has a bar. so do most stations down there since booze is necessary.
#20 His name is Emilio not Emile.
June 25, 2015 — 11:52 pm
all these facts are so short, couldnt they all be on one page instead of 20 pages?
October 28, 2015 — 1:00 pm
Ads. That is why they need 20 pages. To make space for ads.
June 27, 2015 — 6:29 am
I think that the Argentinian military and their gobernment together with the pedophile church are the most infamous and dirty players that exist all over the world. They should be invaded by the alliance and stop with so much abuse against their own decent citizens workers. Shame on a country invaded by delinquents and assassins at every level on that damned nation.
SHAME SHAME ON YOU ARGENTINA!!!…
August 2, 2015 — 1:56 pm
So what’s the picture of the antarctic spaceport all about? Click bait, huh?
October 29, 2015 — 11:31 pm
I have completed three contracts on Antarctica for the United States Natonal Science Foundation. It is not requrired to undergo any unecessary operations, including appendix or teeth.
October 31, 2015 — 12:12 am
Welcom from economic fisit rom from in indonesia.
October 31, 2015 — 3:03 pm
I’m by Cape Town, South Africa. Interesting points these about our southern neighbour, across the great pond. Winter time, middle of the year, cold winds blow here, from Antartica.
Polar bears don’t exist at Antartica. Penguins do exist there, and elsewhere in the southern hemisphere. At Antartica is the leopard seal, top of the food chain.
There are no permanent inhabitants on Antartica, humans or animals.
That picture of a few flags next to each other, and a pole, is at the south pole. Americans have a base there.
On Antartica is also a Scott Museum, one of the base stations of Robert Scott’s tragic expedition to the south pole.
October 31, 2015 — 3:11 pm
There is a theory that the Nazis continued to operate a secret base in Antartica, with flying saucers, after World War Two.
December 5, 2015 — 2:13 pm
Sure! And hitler is there freezed waiting Dr.Frankestain to restore his abilities
November 1, 2015 — 2:49 pm
Very nice word
November 2, 2015 — 5:02 am
That picture of the South African base is SANAE IV. The previous three were apparently too buried in ice, and abandoned.

December 6, 2015 — 9:36 am
Why not claim land there for an Arctic Zoo? Seems to me the Arctic is losing ice too quickly and the Antarctic may yet have some spare territory.
December 6, 2015 — 11:31 am
There is already a zoo there.Wich kind of animals would you like to add?It is really dangerous the affluence of tourists that threat the enviroment like they did elsewhereTh
April 12, 2020 — 6:34 am
thats so amazing picture.. may I save it??
